Squaresites

Bruce Russell is currently painting a major new series of works on a square format, his painterly themes deriving from places of fable and myth. These works will feature in Russell's upcoming one-man show at the Beardsmore Gallery in London (21March - 21 April 2007).

Diamond Series and Circle Series

The new Diamond and Circle Series will be shown at the in New Orleans in Spring 2007 (pending the hurricane recovery programme), alongside a major 50 year retrospective of New Orleans native Kendall Shaw, one of the founders of the New York Pattern and Decoration movement of painters in the late 1970s.  This movement was reported and reproduced in Britain in early Artscribe issues, and strongly influenced and encouraged an emerging generation of British abstract painters challenging the hegemony of late modernist reductionism, as well as political, conceptual and text-based work.

A major essay by Bruce Russell and published by Frari Books will accompany this show. Russell is also curating a version of the show to come to the UK in 2007-8; this will coincide with [meta-] co-curated by the noted painter and critic David Ryan, updating and extending Russell's “5x20” show into a touring survey show and catalogue of current middle-generation abstract painters in the UK.

5 x 20
five abstract painters:
twenty years on

5 x 20 was a major touring survey show of the five painters selected by James Faure Walker for the 1979 Hayward Annual. It juxtaposed one work by each artist – Faure Walker, Jenny Durrant, William Henderson, Russell and Gary Wragg – from that show with new works produced 20 years afterwards in 1999. The show and accompanying catalogue was curated by Bruce Russell, with essays by Faure Walker and Chris Horrocks. The show toured to Oldenburg, Germany and New Orleans, USA.
